  2. I disagree and agree at the same time because substance abuse leads to more issues such as domestic violence. I disagree because if they are going to criminalize substance abuse they should do all substance abuse such as being an alcoholic which in today's society is not illegal it is just frowned upon. It needs to be all or nothing when it comes to the criminalization of substance abuse not pick one and let others slide.

  3. I agree because substance abuse is exactly what it looks like s"ubstance abuse" abusing the substance. I believe it may be part of the reasons violence such as domestic or child abuse, such as using drugs while pregant or occurs because the substance they use takes over their minds if they dont have the substance then they begin to do things becasue they can't opperate without the substance. when it does boil down to criminalization of the substance i do feel they shouldnt narrow their options to only one but at the same time they been researching and may feel like thats the right thing to do.

  5. I strongly agree because history has proven through the end results of criminal behavior that the vast majority of criminal convictions have been associated with some kind of substance abuse at the time of the violation. From the sociological perspective, a person is taught to act and react within social norms that are engrained in one from an early age. However, when one abuses mind altering substance, they tend to do things they would otherwise not do because they are already participating in activity that is not accepted by society.

  6. I agree and disagree with the criminalization of substance abuse because not eveyone is fortunate enough to have people that they can turn to for him so they turn to drugs and alcohol because they feel like that is there only way out of whatever situation that they are in. On the other hang it is bad because people who are under the influence commit all types of crimes. Most crimes now a days involve either drugs or alcohol.

  7. I disagree with the criminalization of substance abuse. Drug abuse is a medical and psychological problem, not a criminal problem. I never done drugs, however have been around people that have been on drugs, and some people need to seek medical help for these issues. I understand that the law want to put an end of subatance abuse and crack down on the rate of crime it causes. But when they lock these type of people up, if they would provide them with some type of help maybe it wouldn't be as bad.

  8. I strongly disagree with the criminalization of substance abuse because the individuals are not committing crimes toward persons or property. The abuse comes from one not being able to cope with issues or circumstances that he/she may be facing that causes most individuals to abuse substances that will temporary releive them from their problems. Therefore, I feel that an expert, professional in that area would be a better solution that incarceration or leagal actions taking place because their harming themselves not others.

  9. I disagree with the criminalization of substance abuse, because the medical and psychiatric communities view addiction as a treatable disease and therefore should not be a criminal act. In our current criminal justice system, an addict is arrested for possession, drug tested by the courts and jailed when the first drug test comes back positive. The addict with a criminal record is viewed as irresponsible and immoral instead of as a person with a disease in need of treatment.

  10. I disagree with the criminalization of substance abuse because putting the user in jail does not provide them with the resources to stop using. I also agree with Frankie in that the medical and psychiatric communities state addiction can be treated if the proper help and support is provided. Placing the user in jail does not help them address the issues that may have caused the addition or substance abuse because many times the problem is deeply rooted and requires intense counseling/therapy.

  11. I disagree with criminalization of substance abuse, because I think we need to find out the reason behind it and try to help them. Now if a crime was involved like theft or murder then yes they should go to jail but try to help them out by counsel, new job training and see if want help. If we just throw them in jail and nothing changes within, then when they are out the cycle begins again.

  12. I likewise disagree with the criminalization of substance abuse. Locking someone up does not fix the problem; in most cases the problem never gets resolved because you are out in a short while and doing the same thing. I feel that a person should be provided counseling and rehabilitation. On the other hand, if the substance abuse causes someone to be harmed there should be punishment. A person can be helped if they face their fears, hurts, pains and whatever it is that causes them to turn to substance abuse.

  13. Being an addict is not a criminal offense, it is a medical and mental disorder in need of treatment. Our jails and prison are overrun with offenders labeled as criminals because of crimes stemming from substance abuse; however, punishing them does not address the underlying disorder that causes them to commit crimes to support their addiction. I disagree with the criminalization of substance abuse.

  14. i beleive they need to criminalize substance abuse because substance abuse can lead to serious acts of behavior. it can lead to acts like child abuse, domestic violence and another various things that can be stopped before it happens. every substance should be included like alcohol. not only should it be criminalized but there should also be a rehabilitation program.

  15. I think that some people should be lightly punished for certain kinds of substance abuse, such as abuse of hard core drugs that are destructive to the person and the community. By being lightly punished, they should be sentenced to a drug rehabilitation program that educates (prevention) them of the consequences of their behavior. In addition they should be sentenced to do community service in their local community, for instance at a boys and girl club or a high volume ER department where they can witness firsthand the effects of drug abuse.
